X-Men: Apocalypse” has found its latest mutant.
Newcomer Lana Condor has been cast as Jubilation Lee, A.K.A. Jubilee, director Bryan Singer announced on his Instagram account Wednesday.
Created by Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri, Jubilation Lee made her comics debut in 1989’s “Uncanny X-Men” No. 244. A mutant who later discovers she can generate energy fireworks from her hands, Jubilation is introduced as a Chinese American gymnast who lives in Beverly Hills with her wealthy parents until they are murdered by hitmen. She runs away from an orphanage and lives in a Hollywood mall, stealing to survive and running from mall cops before she is rescued by X-Men members.
In the comics, she is currently a vampire after a run-in with Dracula.
Condor isn’t the first actress to bring Jubilee to the big screen, though she has never before been a major character in the movies; Katrina Florence portrayed her in 2000’s “X-Men,” and Kea Wong played her in “X-Men 2″ (2003) and “X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006).
Condor joins a cast that features other up-and-comers Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler), Sophie Turner (as Jean Grey), Alexandra Shipp (Storm) and Tye Sheridan (Cyclops).
Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and Rose Byrne are reprising roles they previously played in the film franchise.
Oscar Isaac is set to play the popular titular villain of the 1990s storyline “Age of Apocalypse.” The character, also known as En Sabah Nur, appeared in an end-credits cameo in last year’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” also directed by Singer.
“X-Men: Apocalypse” is scheduled to begin filming this spring in Montreal and is due in theaters May 27, 2016.
