Fans of the iconic sci-fi series
The X-Files were given a true gift this Sunday at New York Comic Con: the first trailer of the show’s highly anticipated eleventh season, which is due to be released this year. Within the first few seconds, the trailer delivers everything that is so beloved about the show: the mysterious, creepy suggestion of extraterrestrial life as well as the undeniable presence of Mulder and Scully (David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, respectively). The trailer feels apocalyptic and mysterious, which is the usual correct frequency for a good
X-Files season, even though it only uses footage from half of the new season. They've so far only filmed five out of the ten episodes slated for the upcoming season, according to
io9.
Series creator Chris Carter also took the opportunity to
tease a little bit of the storyline of the upcoming season during the show’s panel at Comic Con. Carter revealed that the new season will prominently feature Mulder and Scully’s son William, and the show will explicitly "explore the father-son-mother relationship" and "you’ll see more of William than you’ve seen in a long time." Carter also assured that Mulder and Scully would be "kissing close," a nod to the show’s fervent fan-fueled shipping of the true protagonists.
The excitement around the resurrected show was enough to get Carter talking about all kinds of things. "There’s a lot of life left in this show," Carter said. He more or less confirmed that the eleventh season will keep with tradition and end on a cliffhanger, but he also said "never say never" to another
X-Files movie. And if history is anything to go by, Carter’s excitement is not out of line with reality, as the
X-Files seems to keep being resurrected to great excitement. The original
X-Files ran for a healthy nine years from 1993 to 2002 before the show’s revival for a limited tenth season in 2016 which has turned out to be not so limited after all, seeing as an eleventh season is well under way.
