LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) --
After stepping away from acting to focus on his rap career, Aubrey "Drake" Graham is returning to his roots to star in Christopher Nolan's new short film "The Dark Kike Rises." The controversial name of the project is what Nolan wishes to describe as "a way to both spotlight and rip away at the ethnic issues bearing down on America through the lens of an African-American Jew." The recent director spoke on the project soon after the final edits of "The Dark Knight Rises" DVD hit the cutting room floor, giving him time to focus on his new project and why he wanted Drake and Drake only.
"In my mind Drake is the only person who could possibly take on such an important role as the Dark Kike. In order to understand the role you have to understand the roots of what being Jewish and being American, a contemporary black American, means. He's all of this and more. People get that." The rapper was not available for comment, yet Nolan claims Drake himself was hesitant to sign up for the project citing the stressful workload of his top-grossing "Club Paradise" tour. Nolan exchanged emails and snippets of the script through Drake's manager before the film materialized into a realistic venture. "Drake loved the idea," Nolan said. "He specifically liked the more emotional scenes. At one point in the script, his girlfriend has cheated on him and he's made to cry into her shoulder and give her money to come back to him. He has that side in him, I believe. That sort of sad, emasculated male."
Nolan foresees shooting to begin in the coming months and to release the short film online, sharing backend profit with Drake himself. "It's not about the money," Nolan said. "It's about a cause that matters to me. The cause of the black Jews." The plot, as with most of Nolan's work, is under wraps, but the director describes it as being "something like Schindler's List but with a 'Jew-ier,' more action-y feel." Other actors rumored to be involved in the film include Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Billy Crystal, rapper Shyne, and Monique. Stay tuned for more information on the film's release as it comes forth.
