The Ruler's Back - Slick Rick

there are several reasons why this isn't a great album but i've come to appreciate several songs off of it

but you can tell Rick wasn't in his element.

Ricky D still one of the GOATs

this shyt still goes tho! :ohlawd:

You know, im probably the only person on God's green earth who likes The New Danger.

in no way am i saying it's a classic, but it is a great album to me. so many songs on the album that i like and love.

Mos was one of my favorite MC's, so this one was always a tough listen for me.

I think it's mostly the production, and the album just being all over the damn place. Seemed like he took mixtape stuff and just cutting room sh*t and decided to throw it all on there. So that album still drives me crazy, lol.

I never listened to Pun's "Yeah Baby" album. Today, I decided to play it and man.......the only good thing I can say about this album is they got the singles right. "It's So Hard" & "100%" still get play from me.

I think Joe said that Pun was going for a more commercial sound on this album...

I believe that Joe was going to have Pun crossover and start making reggaeton music. That craze was about to pop off too.

I really think that's why they wanted Pun to lose the weight and turn him back into a sex symbol.

same here, been lisening to him since 97'

i will admit, the sequencing is off on The New Danger.
yeah, it's a hodge podge and the songs don't always mesh well together, and songs like The Edge sounded like a mixtape cut but there some gems!

i understand lol

it also doesn't help that. that album was a far cry from Black On Both Sides in so many ways and that alone threw a lot of people off.

Exactly.

He took old joints that he had on mixtapes and just threw them on the album, lol. Black on Both Sides seemed like a very intentional project, that he took time on and really worked on getting every detail right. The New Danger seemed like he told them to just take his throwaway tracks and make a whole album with them, and f*ck sequencing, lol.

Yeah

And in addition to that, he also was doing the band thing, with Black Jack Johnson and trying to wing the band's music on there too; there was just a lot going on with that album, so i get why many are turned off by it.

right?! LOL!

now i know one i stand absolutely alone on is True Magic lol

True.

I liked the idea of the band, but he was definitely trying to sneak the concept into the album. I always felt that should've been a separate thing. Like what Lupe was doing with Japanese Cartoon.

Don’t get me started on True Magic. I don’t even know what that was supposed to be. LOL!! They said that was released just to get him out of his deal. It sounds like it too.

Definitely, i think so too.

I agree, it would've benefited the band a whole lot more to give them their space and for The New Danger to have it's own space too.

Yeah, I often times wonder if because for whatever reason the band's album couldn't pan out, if that was his way of saying, "hey guys, this is the least I can do"

remember that HBO Special they did back in the day?

LOL! i knew if you didn't like The New Danger, you definitely disliked True Magic.

yeah, i remember all the reviews saying it was just his a quick release for him to get off of Geffen

true story!

i remember buying that album in Target.
if there was any pub for it, i don't remember at all, i just so happen to be browsing in Target's electronic section and stumbled upon it!

clear case, no cover art work at all, just the all black cd with his name and face in purple on the cd

i still have the actual album too!

lifetime, there is a way, fake bonzana, thug is a drug, napoleon dynamite, crime and medicine, undeniable are among some of my favorite songs on the album

Fake Bonzana maybe yasiin's most underrated song :ohlawd:,
