PRICHARD, Alabama --
Police in Prichard were forced to open fire on one of their own patrol cars today. It happened in the parking lot of a Dollar General store in Eight Mile.
Police say the suspect, Tasha Fields, was stealing batteries from the store. They responded to the call, arrested her, then put her into the back of the patrol car. Police Chief Jimmy Gardner said the woman was able to move her cuffed hands from behind to in front of her, climb over from the back to the front seat, and put the car in drive in an attempt to get away.
Officers then opened fire on the cruiser. The photo shows multiple shots in the windshield and side windows shot out. The car eventually came to a stop in a ditch with Fields uninjured.
Gardner says the car is one of Prichard's newest patrol cars and was scheduled to have a cage that separates the front and back seats installed. Had it been in place, this incident likely wouldn't have happened.
