A Hawkins County woman is charged with attempted murder after she drove her car through a church, then stabbed her husband on the altar, according to Church Hill investigators.
Authorities say Steven Hamman called 911 Sunday morning around 9:50 a.m. to report that he had been stabbed. He told officers that his wife, Stephanie Hamman, 23, had left their apartment and driven to Providence Church, which was across the street. She had driven the vehicle through the front doors of the church. He found her lying on the altar, and when he went to check on her, she stabbed him in the chest with a large kitchen knife. He said she told him, "The devil is in me." He ran to his apartment, where he called for help. She then left the church.
About 20 minutes later, authorities learned that Stephanie Hamman had been brought into the emergency room at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport.
She told officers that God wanted her to take things to the church, but the door was locked, so she went in anyway. She also said she was angry with her husband because he was "worshiping the NASCAR race in Bristol" and it made her mad.
Hamman was charged with attempted first-degree murder and felony vandalism.
