Woman has prior drunken driving conviction in NH
SANFORD, Maine —
The woman accused of driving onto a baseball field during a Babe Ruth baseball game, hitting and killing a spectator, appeared in court on Monday and was ordered held on $500,000 bail.
Carol Sharrow, 51, of Sanford, Maine, did not speak inside the courtroom, where she faced a manslaughter charge.
No plea was entered in the case, which is standard for initial court appearances in Maine.
Sharrow was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
Grief counselors were available at all schools in Sanford on Monday as classes resumed for the first time since the crash on Friday evening. Sanford schools are also providing guidance to parents on how to talk to their children about traumatic events.
Police believe hundreds of people, including many children, saw the crash.
Investigators said Sharrow drove through an open gate and onto the field, hitting and killing Douglas Parkhurst, 68, who was watching his grandson's Little League game.
In 2013, Parkhurst admitted he was drunk behind the wheel of a vehicle that struck and killed a 4-year-old girl on Halloween 45 years earlier, according to police in Fulton, New York.
Witnesses to the incident on the baseball field said Parkhurst pushed children out of the way of Sharrow's car.
"We were trying to close the gate so she couldn't get out because you have little kids across the field," witness Mark Stuart said.
It is not clear why Sharrow drove onto the field.
While investigators have not said if alcohol was a factor in the ballfield crash, Sanford police said Sharrow has two drunken driving convictions -- one in Maine and one in New Hampshire. In 2002, she pleaded guilty to a crash in Portmouth.
Police in Maine are investigating a possible motive for the ballfield rampage and whether Sharrow was under the influence.
