I just got finished upgrading this laptop that was running Windows Vista. If anyone offers you money to do this, tell them to kick rocks. If the OS is installed on a Dell, set them on fire and THEN make them go kick rocks.
This thing had NO updates from the factory. Windows Vista is no longer supported by Micro$oft. I couldn't change the BIOS settings because Dell puts a password on it that you can't break by 'normal' means. If you want them to give you a Master Password, it'll cost you about $60 even if you have a warranty. The battery can't hold a charge so I had it plugged into a wall outlet for the duration I was working on it. The Service Packs wouldn't install due to driver conflicts and I had to get 2 files installed before I could even download the Service Packs to install 'em. On top of everything else, since the client was using IE.......................VIRUSES EVERYWHERE!!!!
So, after convincing the client that saving some files and doing a clean install was the best option, I used Dell's utility to re-format and re-install everything to factory-settings and am FINALLY installing these damned updates, a decent anti-virus, a REAL browser, and set this thing up so they don't have to think about updating/maintenance so long as they turn this PC on at least once a day around 3 PM for an hour. I was originally going to upgrade them to Windows 7, but after working on this POS for 2 days, I'm just giving this thing back to 'em in working order. This thing breaks again, I ain't touching it for less than $200.
