EXCLUSIVE: William Fichtner has taken a lead role in Independence Day 2. Actually, he has signed with Fox to play a top general in that film, and take an even larger role in the two films that will follow. This comes after Fichtner joined the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. Fichtner has been doing such good work for so long as a character actor–Heat, The Perfect Storm, Black Hawk Down are just a few–it’s hard to begrudge him taking that next step in big tent pole fare like Independence Day, which is being directed by Roland Emmerich in a re-team with his former creative partner Dean Devlin.
