It’s all about context. It’s not deflection if it’s the truth. Criticism of the black community takes nuance because so many forces have conspired against us.
You can’t ignore that an entire racial group had their beginnings in this country start with oppression, terrorism, being sold, raped, beaten, family legacy and community ripped away from them and made to work to death.
If this had ended in 1868, then we might have been able to regroup. AND WE DID. In spite of everything. No formal instruction in the English language. No knowledge of a life outside of slavery and fear.
And yet, those early black pioneers made connections with other blacks and pressed on to create thriving successful towns of their own. Even as they were still being rounded up to be enslaved, lynched, hunted, turned to new forms of slavery like sharecropping. And STILL not getting paid for their efforts.
They STILL went through all of that to build their own towns.
But then guess what?!
Those towns were destroyed. People hunted and killed. Lynched, terrorized. Facilitating MORE chaos decades after slavery.
But we moved and rebuilt our communities again. Only to have them ravaged by war, drugs, mass incarceration and abject poverty. All while denying basic employment to blacks, devaluing the 1# source of wealth accumulation in this country: homeownership.
All of this brings us to current times where we are STILL having toxic waste dumped into our communities, biological diseases being tested on us, voter suppression, blacks murdered, job discrimination, police brutality and all of this against the backdrop of whites utterly lying on our community.
The history. Lies.
The research consumed by popular media. Lies.
“Black men deadbeat dads!” “Black women ugly, stds, hypersexual!”
Black image consumed primarily by subculture of hedonism, greed, violence, hyperagression, hypersexuality to promote the lies whites pushed about us from the start that we are hypersexual, violent bucks and jezebels who need white interference.
We can’t talk about black progress in an ideal world because we don’t live in one. Our progress and improvement HAS to be planned within the context of systemic white supremacy and racism to prep our people for these realities, understand our history and plan for contingencies to overcome these forces.
Anything less is disingeuous, black bashing porn with the intent of absolving whites of responsibility for the mess they made and ignoring realities we need to prepare for.
