Will Smith’s fart on ‘Men in Black’ set led to 3-hour cast, crew evacuation, director reveals

Will Smith farted so badly on the set of “Men in Black” that he forced the cast and crew to evacuate for three hours, director Barry Sonnenfeld revealed.
Sonnenfield told the gaseous anecdote on the latest episode of Kelly Ripa’s SiriusXM podcast “Let’s Talk Off Camera,” where the veteran filmmaker was promoting his new book, “Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time.”
Smith and co-star Tommy Lee Jones had to be “hermetically sealed” and locked into a tight space to film a scene for the iconic 1997 sci-fi blockbuster, Sonnenfeld recalled, but but just before they started rolling, Smith broke wind.
“They have to be put in this device, which is [a car] that transforms into a hyper car, and [they’re] going to go through the Midtown Tunnel upside down,” he said.
“We have to bring a ladder over on wheels like it’s like the old days, when you would get on airplanes from the tarmac. We get them up there and we put them in the thing and we turn it upside down and we’re ready to shoot.”
“I hear Will Smith go, ‘Oh, Jesus, so sorry. Tommy, so sorry. Baz, get the ladder,’” he continued. “And you hear Tommy saying, ‘That’s fine, Will. No worries, Will. Don’t worry, Will.’”
Soddenfeld said he ran the ladder over to the device. Jones raced down the stairs to escape the stench. The smell was so overpowering that the cast and crew “evacuated” the stage for three hours.
“What happened was, Will Smith is a farter. It’s just some people are, and you really don’t want to be inside a very small hermetically sealed space with a Will Smith fart. You don’t even want to be sitting next to him at the Disney ranch,” the director joked.
