ATSC 3.0 OTA Tuners Will Be Released in the US in The Next Few Days

Today, the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) announced that the International Telecommunications Union has adopted ATSC 3.0 as a recommended digital broadcast standard.

In a press release, the ATSC explained that ATSC 3.0 offers more flexibility and adaptability for broadcasters, resulting in an improved viewing experience for consumers on both home and mobile screens.

“With initial U.S. deployments in place, we’re anticipating the first announcements of consumer receivers for the U.S. market in the coming days. The decision by the ITU is yet another signal that digital terrestrial broadcasting has a bright future ahead,” said ATSC Board Chairman Lynn Claudy, Senior VP of Technology for the National Association of Broadcasters.

The next step, according to the ATSC is to update the guidelines for best practices in implementing ATSC 3.0 and providing support for new devices and technology. With new consumer receivers just days away from becoming available for the US market, those plans are already underway.

“ATSC appreciates the efforts of the U.S. Delegation to the ITU, led by the U.S. FCC, and we congratulate the ITU on its careful review and decision to include ATSC 3.0 as an official ITU standard. The system is currently commercially deployed in South Korea where audiences have been enjoying high-quality Ultra HD video and next generation audio from ATSC 3.0 broadcasts since 2017. U.S. commercial deployment begins in earnest this year,” said Madeleine Noland, President of ATSC.

Im keep updating the OP with companies names thats trending and making waves

But "Roku had a really great 2019 if you look at the stock market. According to a report from CNBC, Roku’s stock went up 355% in 2019 and was the best performing tech stock of 2019. This comes as Roku has continued to see strong growth with Roku TVs and Roku players."

Fincons Group To Show 3.0 Monetization Platform At CES 2020
The SDP platform leverages AI and ML to unlock Next Gen TV benefits for broadcasters.

Jan 3, 2020

LOS ANGELES—The development of the ATSC 3.0 standard and AI has proceeded on parallel tracks, but next week at CES 2020 in Las Vegas the two look to come together in the form of a new publishing platform that promises to make the most of the personalization and addressable advertising potential of Next Gen TV.

Fincons Group, an IT business consultancy, will show its Smart Digital Platform (SDP) that leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning with plugins for machine learning engines to enable broadcasters to take advantage of new monetization models enabled by Next Gen TV.

The platform addresses application development by enabling their automatic generation to speed delivery of advanced television services. At CES, the company will demonstrate the platform being used in live applications that take advantage of the TV personalization potential of Next Gen TV, the company said.

Samsung S11

The Galaxy S11 is one step closer to reality. After a promotional video surfaced that accidentally revealed the date of the launch, Samsung has now made its Unpacked event official -- the brand will reveal its first phones for 2020 on Feb. 11 in San Francisco at 11 a.m. PT. The event will take place at the Palace of Fine Arts (not a real palace). Samsung made its announcement on Saturday, days before the annual CES show in Las Vegas begins.

Industry watchers expect the company to unveil a trio of Galaxy S11 phones in three sizes, as well as a foldable rival to Motorola's Razr, which Samsung teased in October.

Samsung's latest 8K TVs will include 4K over-the-air tuners
ATSC 3.0 will give you much sharper-looking free broadcasts.

AP Photo/Michael Sohn

Samsung's next wave of 8K TVs are likely to have numerous features to catch your eye, but one of the more important additions may be one of the simplest: an improvement to free broadcasts. The tech giant has revealed that its 2020 QLED 8K catalog will include ATSC 3.0 tuners with NEXTGEN TV to deliver over-the-air 4K programming, multi-channel object-based audio and "enhanced" content to US viewers. Your TV still won't be used to its fullest potential, but this beats having to pay for cable or streaming services to get a live TV picture beyond 1080p.

It won't be surprising if rival TV makers are also hopping aboard the ATSC 3.0 bandwagon. Still, this is good news for 4K TV adoption. Access to 4K in the US is still inconsistent with only some channels and shows using the higher resolution. This won't get creators to release every show in 4K, but you won't have to pay extra to enjoy it when available.
