Why was Issa Rae the only person to take advantage of the web series phenomenon?

I like how Issa was able to use the same Awkward Black girl character but expand it into a whole new show. Plus, she looks out for her old co workers by giving them roles.

Other YouTubers have tried, but it's not an easy jump from the Internet to Hollywood. It's easier when you're an actor just auditioning for roles rather than a writer trying to pitch a show.

People need to realize that Issa wasn't just an overnight celebrity either. Issa's internet hustle was a thing of genius. After Awkward Black Girl got so popular she started her OWN production company that produced several popular web series, short films and a podcast. She actually still produces web series (Giants). THATS what got her the attention of the major TV studios because she was basically running her own independent studio

Her hustle to get it from Youtube to an HBO series was impressive as hell. Having worked for television for almost 20 years, it is a not that easy to pitch a show involving the adventures of a 20 something Black woman.

Insecure was originally titled "I Hate LA Dudes" and was produced for ABC with Shonda Rhimes executive producing. Issa has said that the show became too much Shonda's and other execs vision and not hers, which led to the concept not being picked up.

After that HBO reached out. She spent 3 years getting Insecure through the development phase at HBO and has talked at length at how hard the process was because the execs at HBO move slowly and she was used to going from concept to filming rather quickly.
