Because Mace was always a real one who saw through people.
He wanted to move away from the senate in Episode II but Yoda thought it was too risky. He also never supported the idea of putting Anakin with Palpatine in Episode III. AND he saw through Palpatine's charade when we pretended to lose his powers.
He underestimated Anakin's desperation and that was his downfall.
To date the only person who beat Palpatine in a one to one. Real recognize real and the force gave him immortality like Qui-Gon without needing training like Yoda/Obi-Wan/Luke.
The one thing TROS got right is that as Palpatine got his powers back (which was dumb) the Jedi,incl Anakin and Mace now working together, were there to stop him. The ONLY way TROS works for me is that it's not Rey herself who defeats Palpatine but "all of the Jedi" who were there to help her.
