That's real simplistic.

The head of the school, David Banks, is a member of my church. There's a lot that goes into Eagle Academy. My mom lives up the street from there and my wife's nephew went there until last year when he's now in a boarding school upstate.

It's not about simply wanting to get out of Beprooklyn because most kids want that. That isn't some only Eagle Academy thing.

:dwillhuh: this school is literally up the block from me, i had no idea it became this. i remember it being jhs 271

but this is great that students are doing well. this should be a model for the rest of the city

It's 271....but broken up into different schools within the school. They're now up to tenth grade.

THIS

It all boils down to who you were raised around and how determined the individual is.

Well....I went to a school full of West Indians called Prospect Heights for two years. I saw a lot of playing with education in that piece of shyt school.

They even made a movie about my time there.

EH, i could find exceptions in literally anything you ever want to talk about. But it probably helped that it was a private school run by well respected West Indian faculty and teachers. Public schools in NYC are terrible, especially in Brooklyn. Im assuming thats where the school was?

Violence was also an issue within Prospect Heights High School. the area around the school saw a rise in gang activities in the 80s which seeped into the school and cause problems. Prospect Heights High School even ranked the twelfth most violent high school among New York City's 125 high schools in 1990 by the Board of Education, resulting in Prospect Heights High School becoming an example used by advocates for more metal detectors in New York City schools.

that's great to hear. i wish our government and even our population were more dedicated towards education. for some of us, it's a way to get ahead. for others, it's a way to get out alive.

Two of my good friends teach at Eagle Academy. The school is good and it even has me considering joining because I've seen how it works.

It's not much but you've got a lot of young black men trying to suceeed in there.

I remember when I was in HS you'd get made fun of for trying to be smart or doing well. When I visited a few months ago, I got the chance to peep in on a class and observe the kids as they were in between classes. One of the kids was upset cause he got a 75 and he studied really hard. A lot of them were talking about their grades. I was'nt concerned about shyt like that til my junior year of HS and if we really want to be real, til I started college.

A lot of good brothers doing good work in that school. And the Principal is no jokes. This little one was being a knucklehead in class and got sent to the office and kept trying to interrupt him as he was talking to another teacher? Homie put the fear of God into him quick fast and you could see him kinda fall back like aight...time to stop acting the fool.

He's like a football coach almost...tough love through and through

that was back in the good ol crack epidemic era. "Acting white" bullshyt and "keeping it real" was at its height. I'm glad that kids are changing that attitude now. I can only imagine what is gonna happen in another 20 years.
