Why is Monotheism more popular in the World today then Polytheism?

nice and simple but faith is something you keep to yourself just because someone told you not to believe a certain way does not mean you just stop.

You think people saw there prosperity and influence and realized there beliefs were not working? Is it just easier to fit your previous beliefs into a monotheist one? Remember at one point around the world Polytheism was the dominant religion and even India has manged to keep it.

Partially, but again, don't count out political expedience and violent imposition. There was a time, when the Roman Empire was at its height, when polytheism was dominant in the world. The Romans actually considered the Jews primitive because they were monotheistic, and polytheism was associated with civilization. It's all historical contingency.

I am just trying to figure out where the shift came from? I really think violence played a silent factor in the conversions for many. It made them suppress there beliefs which they could not pass on to there children.

That's what I've always thought. Take Christianity, sprinkle a little paganism on it and voila; Catholicism.


If you look at a list of Catholic patron saints, they have more deities that can be prayed to than the Romans did by far.

Plus with all their shrines and rituals, they're damn near voodoo status.
