Why in Guardians of the Galaxy was the infinity gems called the infinity stones?

Are they the same thing? I have a infinity gauntlet comic, and in it Thanos gets all of the infinity gems. During the movie I was when they called it an infinity stone.

It's because Marvel has this weird shyt where they feel like changing the name makes it "new" and "easily accessible" to new and casual fans and readers.

meanwhile, us old school readers be hoping that they don't change the name in comics to fit new movies.
