TV writers get respect. When we talk about TV shows the writers/show runners are mentioned before the directors

It’s feature films where it’s more the director’s vision unless they’re a writer-director. I recently got into screenwriting and what I’ve learned is if you’re one of the few screenwriters to actually get a script green lit once it’s out of your hands it’s no longer yours. The director can add lines, change the meaning of certain dialogue depending on how they direct the actors, delete or add scenes and film a scene in a completely different way than what you initially intended. That’s why you can have good movies with bad scripts and bad movies with good scripts

On Tv there’s less room for visuals and filmmaking technique, it’s much more dialogue heavy with single locations so the writing will standout more

In film writers only provide the blueprint whereas with tv it’s the writer’s vision

People always talk about directors but never writers in the same air of reverence.

But without writers we get movies like Sucker Punch.

So why don't they get as much love as directors?
They do or they use to

Why think Steven king is so big ot tom Clancy. Mark Twain got a whole award named after him.

Hell as a kid rl stine was huge.

If you are talking about screen plays that is a different story

Makes me think about how I treat the two. Television is like my friend. Very dialogue heavy relationship. That’s why i can’t get into shows like Power or The Sopranos. I watch shows like ATL, and Seinfeld.

Cinema is like insight to the outside world. Being in new york, I definitely and occasionally walk by and share spaces with dudes in the mob.

But that relationship is based more on outside circumstances and not direct conversation. I feel like cinema is consistent with that experience. That’s how i explain having such wide range when it comes to cinema. Drama, horror, crime, romcom. I love it all.

But when it comes to tv, i just wanna see regular ppl like will, jerry, and donald talking about and figuring out more mundane situations.

So why don't they get as much love as directors?

Two reasons:

1. The creative vision of the screenwriter is ultimately secondary to that of the director. While making the movie, a director can toss a scene, order a rewrite on the fly, change the order of shyt, etc.

2. Screenwriting is more of a collaborative process. Like, due to WGA rules and regulations, the credit you see on the screen doesn't tell the whole story of the people who contributed to the script via rewrites, doctoring, etc. Case in point: Graham Yost is credited as the sole writer for Speed. However, Joss Whedon was responsible for a huge amount of the dialogue and characterization...but WGA rules stated that only Yost could be credited. David Fincher brought in Andrew Kevin Walker (who wrote Seven) to work on the script for Fight Club, but, again, WGA stipulated that Jim Uhls be the sole credited screenwriter. You can respect screenwriters, but you don't know who you're respecting, if that makes sense.

The director is the one with the vision and with that vision it acts as an addition to the script. A good script ain't shyt without the vision to put it on screen. Stories are told without the script in a lot of ways.

Look at Mad Max Fury Road. There's barely a script because the story is mostly told through what you are seeing on screen.
