Im not sure how you're drawing a distinction between those that follow sports intensely, and those interested in the lives of celebrities. Both are sources of entertainment for the interested party. Trust, a lot of people think its weird that there are heads who watch sports shows compulsively, listen to sports talk radio incessantly, prattle on about sports topics online, etc when they're not watching the games --- and Ive just described a lot of heads.

Basically, with the penetration of mass media, we have 24/7 access to our interests, which obviously was not available in preceding generations.
