Midwest to DC all have what could be considered a southern accent. Even as far west as California have certain words which is disappearing.

Dave Chapelle sounds like proper southern .

Clifton Powell spoke on how "country" he sounded when he started.

Memphis, Dallas, East Texas, and Missouri all have that herrr and derrr slurred words.

She from DC and sounds more southern than any female in Houston to me.

STL has a distinct accent, especially with how many here used the “hard r’s” like when saying here (remember Hot in Herre?), there, where, etc. He maybe accentuated the accent more than most to market his Country Grammar talk, but it’s not far off from how many good STL people talk.
