Why are medical dramas so popular?

My guess is because so many women work in the medical industry

Probably because every damn doctor and nurse on the show look like supermodels... add the over the top sex scenes with Adele/Corine Bailey Rae/Ellie Goulding song playing in the background and you got ratings

I think ER set a precedent and grey's continued. The other ones orbit around those.

Scrubs was my shyt tho (gotta watch it all the way through, only caught rerun eps here and there)

are they though? i admit that even i used to watch er reruns every day. but i dont really know of any others. like does scrubs really count? seems like theres been a million cop shows though.

I didn't watch much of ER, but one scene I remember most was when doctor was gonna sleep, he goes to some room in their office lays down closes his eyes and the door swings open, he's needed for a patient but it's like hours later and he had just closed his eyes.

I don't know why I always remember that, maybe because that what time feels like sometimes.

Only Med Drama I really liked was House, moreso to the parallels to Sherlock Holmes/mysteries than the medical stuff.

Same reason cop shows are successful. Some people don't like serials and prefer procedurals.

Add good looking people and make them all emergency service workers and you got a hit show.

Because, like cop shows, it's easy to keep the juicy drama coming without much buy-in from the viewer.

Political dramas and office dramas are harder because they require a smarter more involved viewer who'll pickup on all the drama. They can't dip into the murder, death, crime, tense situation buckets every week without becoming completely unbelievable. Cop and medical shows can.

I've watched ER,Scrubs Private Practice and Grey's Anatomy. Unlike most dramas a Hospital allows for a bunch of new plots, characters whether they be re-occurring or single episode appearances and wide range of dialog simply because people of all walks of life can get sick or be injured requiring a hospital visit. That combination with relatively large cast which allows writers to focus on any story they like and conjure up insightful, funny, heartfelt or heart breaking moments/scenes is what probably makes it appealing to audiences.

The first 5 seasons of ER waa straight heat..seasons 6-9 were ok to good...after that it was garbage
