I just dont understand how these directors/writers make such garbage films and not know they are garbage :mindblown:. Just finished Doctor Sleep last night--is that even a horror film?--and that shyt was average at best and awful at worst. Cool visual effects and some good acting here and there, but overall it just didnt move me.

I can think of maybe 3 or 4 actual horror films in the last 10 years that are 8/10 or above--Hereditary (among the very best), The Witch, The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2. Actually I might even include the first insidious (not sure if that was released in the 2010s or if it was 2009). Outside of those there just are hardly any great horror films. Most have shytty writing, shytty acting, cheap jump scares, and awful CGI. It's like directors and writers dont even know how to make unsettling films that are aesthetically pleasing works of art. Think of the Shining, Rosemary's baby, the Thing--and now think of nfb the recent garbage out now :scust:

What gives?

first of all, the average horror movie has always been terrible. we are able to have a high opinion of past horror movies because we can cherry pick the best and ignore all the trash.

i will say that CGI loses something when compared to practical effects. there is a serious lack of auteurs in horror. i dont really know why that is but you need dependable names like bava, fulci, argento, cronenberg, carpenter, etc. to stick with the genre for a particular run (maybe a decade) where they work on their craft and show progress.

i think when comic book franchise filmmaking dies off, we may have a chance at better movies in a lot of other genres.

Speaking of Cronenberg, his son dropped a new movie:

I liked "Antiviral", the first one he did:

'It Follows' was great from start to finish.

Horror has been great the last few years. But most of the good stuff isn’t the wide theater releases. But then again, if you didn’t like dr strange, horror might just not be for you.
Might not be for me? :gucci:. I have seen so many damn horror films--too many to count. It's by far my favorite genre of film. Tell me some others that have been great, bc I'm not seeing it. You were impressed by Doctor Sleep? :gucci:. You have low standards then.

I’m not about to go back and write you a summary of the last few years of horror. We got a horror thread on here, get in and learn on your own.

but if you’re looking for just good “films” regardless of genre, Hereditary, The Witch, It Follows & Get Out stack up the best horror movies in the last 40 years. It’s not quite on the 70s level with jaws, Halloween, TCM and the thing in ‘80, but name me a better few year stretch for high end horror since then
