Why are box office numbers released on Sunday not Monday?

Sunday is still considered the weekend.

Does anyone know why?

On Sunday they release the weekend estimates, on Monday they release the actual numbers. It's a business thing but above all, people these days gotta know everything now and don't have the patience to just wait a day.

Oh word.

IMDB and Yahoo always have the numbers on Sunday (I think its around noon), whereas Rotten Tomatoes has it on Monday.

The estimates are always on par, right?

Estimates tend to be pretty close (they calculate the numbers for Sunday based on the numbers of the previous years) so there's rarely a big difference.
