When it came down to it Vegetto took on Buu. Gohan was hyped up for the Cell Saga and then fell off. Vegetal was always more popular.
The Buu saga was not the entirety of DBZ. For the majority of DBZ princess Vegina was a foil/antagonist. GOATKU was the protagonist and GOATHAN was the deuteragonist
Vegeta wasn't really an antagonist past part of the Freeza saga. He was an anti-hero. When Dragonball came back in Super his role was expanded to respond to his popularity.
Lastly Vegeta is a more interesting character than Gohan.
