Ive noticed that break kicks distort easily when you try to boost them up... if my ears aren't lying to me, this is because of the 125-250 hz range, right?

Im thinking that the key to creating kicks from scratch is of course transient compression (I got the Waves c1 :wow:) and reducing up that lower mid range...

I could use some advice though :feedme:

what do you mean "from scratch"? are you making them in a synth? or do you mean just cutting up kicks from breaks and shyt? but yeah, i guess either way, it's gonna be about the adsr and the tone/timbre.

based on your second post, what it really just seems like is that you're having a low-mid-range problem with the snare and the kick. the answer, frankly, is pretty fukking simple on it's face - make a decision. pick what's gonna take up that frequency range and eq accordingly. experiment if you're not sure.

in a track, there's gonna be other things that dip down into those ranges too...it comes down how you manage all that information.

I usually throw very slight distortion on drum breaks with some reverb to fill in space and EQ + a filter for frequency tuning
