INDIANAPOLIS — A woman accused of robbing and assaulting a hospital worker and spray painting 50+ cars inside an Indy parking garage has now also been charged in a violent attack outside a Broad Ripple grocery store that occurred two days after the robbery and vandalism. Denise Honorio, a 34-year-old Indianapolis woman, was arrested earlier this month on charges of robbery, battery and vandalism causing over $50,000 in damages for separate same-day incidents that occurred downtown.
Days prior to her arrest, Indianapolis Metro police were called to an assault of a shopper in a Fresh Thyme parking lot that police now say Honorio was also responsible for.
Robbery and vandalism
Honorio’s initial arrest charges stem from a Feb. 2 incident in which Indiana State Capitol Police reported mass vandalism inside a parking garage off Washington Street where over 50 cars had been covered in white spray paint.
Video of the incident showed a woman, who police say is Honorio, dressed in a stocking cap walking between parked cars while spraying a line alongside the doors.
Days later, on Feb. 7, a police officer spotted Honorio wearing the same clothes she is pictured wearing during the Feb. 2 parking garage vandalism. While searching her, police found an Indiana driver’s license belonging to someone else. When they reached out to the owner, officers found out that on the same day as the vandalism Honorio allegedly attacked a hospital worker walking along Capitol Avenue and stole her purse. Court documents filed against Honorio claim she repeatedly hit the victim in the face, neck and back before kicking her in the face while she was lying on the ground and fleeing with her purse.
Now, police are claiming that Honorio committed yet another attack on an innocent bystander before her arrest on Feb. 7.
Broad Ripple grocery store attack
On Feb. 4, two days after the vandalism and robbery downtown, IMPD officers were called to the parking garage of Fresh Thyme located at 6301 N. College Ave. for a reported assault. Upon arrival, they found a person on the ground suffering from several injuries. It would later be determined the victim had suffered a broken hip and broken elbow, court docs show. The victim told police she was walking out of the grocery to her car when a woman she didn’t know hit her in the head, causing her to fall to the ground. The victim said she didn’t believe the suspect was trying to steal anything.
One witness followed the suspect south to the intersection of Broad Ripple and College but lost track of her. The suspect was described as a 5’9″ tall Hispanic woman wearing a black peacoat and a black hoodie with “KLEIN” written across the chest in white. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses showed a woman dressed in matching clothes getting off an IndyGo bus at Broad Ripple and College before walking to the grocery store
n the video, the woman’s pants appear to have writing on the right leg.
At the time, IMPD released photos of the alleged suspect and asked the public for help identifying them. Police said the suspect was last seen running south in the 6100 block of Carrolton Avenue.
Connecting the dots
While investigating the downtown robbery of the hospital worker and after identifying Honorio as a suspect, police applied for a warrant to search her apartment for additional stolen property. The warrant was granted on Feb. 8 and officers went to search an apartment at 317 E. 38th Street. Inside, they found that a majority of Honorio’s clothes had been packed into suitcases. While searching one suitcase, officers found dark-colored sweatpants with “OFF THE WALL” printed in green lettering on the right leg.
While the “KLEIN” sweatshirt was not found, the sweatpants were a direct match of the ones seen on the suspect in surveillance footage. During a previous interview with police, Honorio told officers that she did not have a car and that she uses IndyGo.
Video also showed the Broad Ripple assault suspect getting off an IndyGo bus at the Park Ave. and 38th Street stop, which is located near Honorio’s apartment.
New charges
Given the evidence compiled against her, Honorio was charged on Wednesday in the Broad Ripple assault. She now faces an additional count of felony 3 aggravated battery causing loss or impairment of bodily function. An initial hearing in the Broad Ripple assault case has been scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday, while a jury trial in the downtown robbery/vandalism is set to begin on April 22.
If convicted of aggravated battery in the Broad Ripple assault, Honorio could be sentenced to up to 16 years in prison.
