Now obviously all three are important and a movie literally couldn't be made without one of them :whoa:

But which one has a little bit of an edge over the others in terms of necessity?

I feel like it's writers cause they created the world that we see come to life. And cause I don't feel like they get enough credit either :manny:

just the way a scene is shot can completely change the meaning to what it was supposed to be

directors are the main component

Unfortunately you can't view it that way. See is as pieces in a puzzle that fit together. Inevitably over time they're all equally important with a spectacular picture.
Sometimes of course one might overshadow the other but there's always equilibrium in the end.

Usually writers are only involved in development, while actors are only involved during the production. Depending on when a director comes, they could be involved in a movie from infancy to the final edit a few weeks before.

So I voted director.

As much as it pains me to say it as a writer lol it's the director. Like @2 Up 2 Down said, a good director can mask a lot of shortcomings. They can shake bad dialogue, get good performances out of meh actors, and just coach everything. And they can be involved in the editing process which is really where a movie is made. The director is the captain of the ship and even the best engineered ship needs a great captain

Well directed movie + weak script/bad acting = still a decent movie for giving life to the source material and helping you 'feel' moments surrounding actors and entire scenes

Good Script + poor direction/bad acting = decent enough movie for the sake of the story

Good acting + poor direction/weak script = the actors will not be able to save this movie from being a mess

im gonna say the actors

cause movies started silent

at the end of the day, movies are 'moving pictures'

carrying a movie without speaking a word is true talent

the opposite end of that spectrum is ad-libbing. carrying a movie by going off script and being in the moment and doing it well is also true talent.

now if you can do both of things then you can throw out the script and put uwe boll on that shyt as the director and you still got a classic.

this is why actors get paid the most.

edit:
i write screenplays and novels, none published yet, i am a film editor and its my major so i know a lil bit bout both acting and directing. all 3 are not easy and as a writer and aspiring director i wish those two were greater than the acting but if you've truly studied film you'd know better.

way more silent film directors were able to make the transition from silent films to talkies than actors, iirc.
