Going live didn't kill it, it was just ahead of it's time and a lot of people were uncomfortable with it's realness. The "Terrence Has A Gun" episode is still and i remember trying to figure out who shot Andre.

I think the ratings may have been slipping so they went Live to spice it up.

Great acting, but it was just a little too dark/real most of the time

It was the closest any sitcom has ever gotten to the social commentary stuff Norman Lear did in the 70s with All In The Family and his other shows.
And no other sitcom has gotten close to it since.
