Man there's so many routes to go with rock music, greatest rock album ever for me is Led Zeppelin IV or Nevermind by Nirvana

But the cool thing about rock music is you tend to grow into different genre's of Rock once you get into it, like my first rock album ever was Back In Black by AC/DC(A lot of hipsters hate on it but i think its cool), then i got into the other classic rock staples, Zepp, Nazareth, Sabbath, Floyd, Ozzy, etc. From there a nikka needed something heavier, and i started listening to NWOBHM stuff like Motorhead, Maiden, Diamond head, and especially Venom. From there,I started fukking with old Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Overkill(you know thrash stuff), then from there cannibal corpse, death, deicide that heavy Death Metal type stuff, and this went on for years and years, until now where i've been listening to Black Metal shyt like Mayhem, Dartkthrone, Leviathan, Xasthur etc.

I also really got into punk in my teenage years, I started with the early stuff, sex pistols, ramones, clash, and ended up with the hardcore shyt like DK, Minor Threat, Black Flag, and the GOAT punk band Bad Brains. I also really fukk with Crust Punk too

But i decided to go the heavier route, there's a lot of softer ways to go, like alternative shyt, you know Nirvana(once again Nevermind is probably one of the greatest albums in human history, In Utero is perfect too), Red Hot Chili Peppers, the pixies, butthole surfers, etc. Best genre of Rock for prettier shyt is Shoegaze tho man, shyt like My Bloody Valentine, its so beautiful

sorry got OD off topic there, at some points i wasnt even talking about rock and more about metal/other shyt but as for some albums you should listen too

Paranoid by Black Sabbath
Dark side of the moon by pink floyd
led zeppelin IV
nevermind by nirvana
Hair of the dog by Nazareth
Blizzard Of Ozz by Ozzy

those are the dadrock essentials, you didnt really give too much info on what kind of rock your looking for so i figure i'll just recommend the kind of shyt i think is cool

Appreciate all the insight...

My fear about the genre was I wouldn't "get" why certain albums were held at such a high regard. The first rock album I ever bought was Nirvana's Nevermind. I immediately fell in love with it and have been in search of something on that same level. Nevermind pretty much put to rest that fear that I wouldn't be able to get the greatness of certain albums.

I've loved N*E*R*D since their first album. I really need to pick up Nothing and Seeing Sounds. For whatever reason I didn't really check for them that heavy when they dropped. I would still play In Search Of... and Fly or Die non-stop. I'm sure I'm going to love those records as well.

I thought In Utero was pretty close to the level of Nevermind, I always loved the poppyness of Nevermind tho

on the subject of N*E*R*D Seeing Sounds is incredible man, its up there in greatness, there's maybe one song on that album holding it back from being better than In Search Of...

this shyt has me like :wow: every time i hear it

Lemme make a case for vintage Rock music right quick..

The true greats, the Rock Gods... on the level of Nas, RZA, Premo etc... laid it down from 67-73. Thats the golden age. Every guitar solo laid down by Jimmy Page, Jimmi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia and Duane Allman, took music to new heights

tbh I always thought the album this came from(Live Through This) was just as good as a lot of Nirvana material

Yea I thought the same as well.. I think they get a lot of unfair hate from Nirvana/Cobain fans for obvious reasons, that's probably where the myth comes from that Kurt wrote most of Live Through This

start with the Blues (robert johnson/howlin wolf/muddy waters) ... move to the beatles/stones/dave clark 5.

Then move to the Kinks (contemporaries of the Beatles/British Invasion bands -- but were the first to really use a distorted guitar sound). If you can find any original "garage rock" from this time period, enjoy.

Move to harder rock - Sabbath/zeppelin (who I don't really like -- but you will recognize the blues influence)/ACDC.

Listen to Velvet Underground here. Great way to prepare for the attitude of punk, but with a completely different sound.

Progress to Punk. Ramones/Clash, then Bad Brains/Black Flag/Husker du, then other regional 80s punk sounds (chicago, boston, LA, etc.).

Skip 80s metal in favor of 80s/early 90s "college rock" (early Alternative). Dinosaur Jr, Pixies, Replacements, REM, maybe sonic youth.

Then there's the 90s alternative scene (nirvana, smashing pumpkins, weezer), industrial/noise (big black, ministry - from the 80s ... nine inch nails I guess).

I could go on ad infinitum and never come close to having a decent chronology.

But, the above is a sampling. Listen to those bands, and you'll find your own Illmatics/36 chambers/etc.
