Where did we get this mentality that causes us to flaunt something we don't have for our peers?

Why is it part of hip hop culture?

Why do we perpetuate this idea that possessions equate success?

Edward Louis Bernays
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Bernays

Edward Louis Bernays (November 22, 1891 – March 9, 1995) was an Austrian-American pioneer in the field of public relations and propaganda, referred to in his obituary as "the father of public relations".[1] He combined the ideas of Gustave Le Bon and Wilfred Trotter on crowd psychology with the psychoanalytical ideas of his uncle, Sigmund Freud.

He felt this manipulation was necessary in society, which he regarded as irrational and dangerous as a result of the 'herd instinct' that Trotter had described.[2] Adam Curtis's award-winning 2002 documentary for the BBC, The Century of the Self, pinpoints Bernays as the originator of modern public relations, and Bernays was named one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century by Life magazine.[3]

The Century of the Self is an award-winning British television documentary series by Adam Curtis, released in 2002. It focuses on how the work of Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, and Edward Bernays influenced the way corporations and governments have analyzed, dealt with, and controlled people.[1]

Wearing gold and diamonds is part of our African heritage..I mean the shyt is found on the ground out there..who are they to tell me I can't wear something that came from my continent .....while they steal it and sell it back to us for 100x the price..they're the ones trying to make me feel bad for wearing it..I'm just carrying on tradition when I flaunt it in their face..

black people don't produce anything, because black men gave up their manhood so they can use the same bathroom as whites who hate them
so there's nothing left but consumerism

Its American culture to be in debt, but looking like a million bucks.

But for the young black folks, its growing up in the Puffy/ Jigga era that made many of us mad materialistic. Now we got people over 30 that still wait on line for the latest Jordans and still out-stunt our peers in the club.

Capitalism. Simple as that. Started with Mercantile Capitalism (slave trade/slave labor), then industrial capitalism, then corporate capitalism, then neolobieral global capitalism, which it is today...there really is no other answer than that.

Pretty much all that needs to be said.

A capitalist society materialism to thrive.

:yeshrug: the money has to circulate. if it stops, we're kinda fukked. you have to go to work, then buy stuff, then use it, then throw it away, then keep working so you can buy other stuff.

It is in human nature to want nice things. Most people that say they don't care about having nice stuff are lying.
Because if that same person saw a real nice car or a fly crib deep down inside they probably want it, but don't believe they can get it so to soothe themselves and appear like a good person they say all types of cliches.

As far as the flaunting goes it is also human nature to be proud of what you worked hard for, and want to show it off.
The problem comes in when the intent is to put others down, and to prove that you are better than them.
This stems from being an overall unhappy person, the materialism is just a symptom of the unhappiness.
