Wrestling in the ring was modeled after Pankration, and the wrestlers was real grapplers back then, and they used to beat people ass who said it was fake or asked them to get in the ring and stretch them. That's how wrestling started to grow and got popular because it was real fighters and it was MMA style

Ask Fighters of the Arts about Gene Labdell, Billy Robinson, Karl Kotch. Even the Great Helio and Carlos Gracie knew to stay their distance.
