After seeing Life of Pi, I couldn't believe how far CGI has come. Its incredible to know that the tiger and much of the wildlife was entirely CGI. I was also surprised to learn that the destruction of NYC in the Avengers was largely shot in a sound studio. CGI has gotten to the point now that its hard to tell what is CGI and what isn't.
I guess it isn't hard to fathom that we'll probably reach a day when digital actors can be rendered in a computer that are indistinguishable from human actors. When that happens, do you see Hollywood moving away from using actual humans when making movies and just using computer generated characters?
I personally don't think its far-fetched because unlike the salaries of actors, the costs of computing keep going down. We're probably a couple of decades away from seeing the cost of creating movies equivalent to the $100 million blockbusters of today in a $1,000 laptop. When that happens, why would any studio in Hollywood pay Jaden Smith $20 million to be the star of a movie when they can create digital doppelganger for almost nothing?
I can see the day when human actors will be a thing of the past and all movies are entirely CGI.
