When selecting keepers, picking your two best players are not always the best way to go about things, especially in an auction league. You want to think about value, and who will give you the most value in your spot your losing. In some leagues there may be special rules about keeping players, so you need to think a little bit more about who to keep (only players that are free agents, after a certain round, a player drafted in the 7th round gets drafted in the 6th, etc.).

In a snake drafting league, I look at what round the player is being kept in, where he is ranked on my player list, and the average draft spot he's been going. For example, in my main league we are allowed to keep any players drafted after the 8th round and I drafted Fred Jackson in the 8th round (12 teams). This year I'm not a big fan of him because of Spiller, but out of all my players I believe he has the best value.

On my current player rankings I have him ranked around the 23rd spot overall and the 13th spot as a running back. In some average draft spots, Fred Jackson is going around the 26th spot. So for me, I will be getting a player at the end of the eighth round when he has been going in the beginning of the third round. Pretty good value for a guy I'm not that crazy about.

At the same time, I am not all against keeping a Brady/Rodgers/Foster/Rice/etc., depending on where you are drafting. If you have the first overall pick, why not keep two other guys then pick the guy you dropped, in essence keeping three players. You can even run the risk in the second and third spot depending on who is being kept. Obviously if your picking towards the end you wouldn't have a chance at those guys anyway so there is value there. At that point, the choice is yours what you value the most.

Next, I'll talk about auction keeper values.
