When hip-hop heads debate the greatest producers of all time, names like Dr. Dre, J Dilla, RZA, Pete Rock and DJ Premier are always at the forefront. Yet, one name that often gets overlooked is DJ Muggs, the mastermind behind Cypress Hill, Latin hiphop culture, Psychedelic Sound, and an influential force in underground hip-hop. Despite his contributions to hiphop, he rarely gets the same level of recognition. Why?

DJ Muggs impact on hip-hop is undeniable. His dark, cinematic production paved the way for artists experimenting with eerie, sample-heavy beats. His work with Cypress Hill helped define hip-hop alternative sound, and his influence is still present in today underground movement, producing entire projects for rappers like Roc Marciano, Mach-Hommy, and Meyhem Lauren. All while maintaining a unique and uncompromising sound. You can still hear his influence in a lot of young producers' beats.

Muggs is a legend who deserves more credit

Short answer, It has a lot to do with rappers he's worked with (thinking more in terms of full LPs) but even one-offs most of the names you see mentioned at the top of lists worked with some of the most iconic emcees ever, Primo for example with Nas/Jay/Big multiple times

But he still gets mentioned and is respected, Some get way more overlooked. Muggs still worked with some big names.

Dr Dre and occasionally Dre dominate West Coast hip hop discussions. And after their 1st album Cypress Hill was for stoner white boys.

He should’ve did an album with Eiht in the 90’s.
