When did the TV show format change

I remember when shows used to play the theme song first.. then commercial then the show starts...
Now theres always a 3 minute start, then theme, then commercials....

When did this happen?

It varies from show to show, but they actually did this to maximize commercial views.

"Veep" has the intro at the very beginning.

one thing i'm glad changed is the studio audience. it works for some shows but takes away from the overall potential for comedy or drama.
