I always looked at too when rappers stopped referring to themselves as Mcs, not just by name but by trade.

I haven't heard mainstream rappers refer to themselves as an MC or use the term in their own rhymes referring to other rappers in well over 2 decades now.

As far as naming themselves "MC so and so", I'm sure that was a marketing/promotional thing from labels. I remember an interview from Prince Po of Organized Konfusion talking about like a 3 minute meeting they had with Russell Simmons before they got signed and the first thing he told them was change their name ("Simply 2 Positive" :mjlol:) cuz the having a number in your name thing was dead. I'd imagine labels started telling other rappers the same if in 1992 you were still calling yourself "MC whatever".

Prolly round the time Snoop and the WU got big so like 93 or 94. After that point, Hip Hop was mostly being made by street adjacent brehs and the identity of being a "nice MC" became less and less important.
Huh? Wu was all about that.

they were and even snoop and kurupt most notably were...but they opened the door for straight up street shyt to come through is my point. the Wu especially so after they and Biggie popularized Mafioso rap. 93/94 is the last stand of the MC identity everything after gets progressively further away from that.
