I feel sorry for those badminton teams, just a few days prior Watxhing a relay race commentators were going on about he's sacrificing for his fellow country man by setting the pace, he won't win but

Japan women's soccer do it

Runners and swimmers do it in the heat

They're not throwing races. They're doing just enough to qualify to conserve their energy.

Japan's women's soccer almost got disqualified except for the fact that they didn't score on their own goal.

So why didnt they disqualify those bball teams that were trying to avoid the US in prior Olympics or losing to us on purpose in a prelim?

i don't think they should have disqualified the teams.

the way the system is set up is just stupid. they set it up so that you benefit from losing certain games and then they wonder why people lose on purpose. either give incentives for wins even when you're already qualified and find a way to randomize the way matches are set up. problem solved.

then again, if you're gonna lose on purpose, at least make it semi-believable. the way they were playing was really lame.

What they did was the equivalent of jacking 3s from halfcourt or throwing possessions out of bounds in basketball. I would love to see the reactions if that happened...

It seems to be an ongoing issue in badminton so they decided to make an example out of it on the biggest stage possible.

Those nations didn't lose to the US Bball team on purpose, first.

Those games were exhibitions, and meant nothing, secondly.

This is the right answer

Its happened in the Olympics too, where some team we will play in the prelims wont even play their star players as much as in a regular game and then when we meet them after group play all of a sudden they play completely different. Clearly they would have lost either way but they didnt give full effort in the first matchup.
