It's supposed to let you know who the good and bad posters are.
All of the trash posters are red. Go to their profiles and look at their rep pages, and you'll be able to see that quite clearly.

I never bothered to notice. There are some horrible posters in the Coliseum but they green.

The idea is similar to that of Reddit. People here don't have a personal stake in creating good content or writing good posts, so the website makes one as incentive for people to not post shytty things. It obviously doesn't work because there's a lot of shyt posting here, but that's the idea behind it.
