It depends on perspective. Gameplay wise, 4 and 5 are the best. 3 is where all the cuhrazzy combos came from. It was also the point in the series where things changed.

Story wise 3 is still the best. 4 feels that they had rushed the game out.

DmC: DMC left a bitter taste in my mouth. The combat was 30 FPS, it had no lock on, devil trigger was nigh on useless and originally an fukk you to fans. It finally fixed its gameplay issues but the story was still rubbish.

Devil May Cry is good but looking back is kinda basic.
