I'm trying to get a degree in the field. Its an industry that seems to be growing. Anyone here been a social worker or know anyone who has worked in the industry? what other paths can I take with that degree to? :lupe:

I have a friend that is a case worker for the homeless.

A common complaint seems to be that caseloads are too high, too many clients per worker but she doesn't seem to have that problem. It just seems to be a draining experience. Her degree was in public health and started out working for a drug rehab center. Got to see a lot of old high school friends sit in front of her needing treatment.

Overall it seems to be a very discouraging field. You're doing a lot of good work but it can be emotionally draining. The money will be there especially if you stick on and play your cards right. Our city has done furloughs for the past few years with the promise that pay will catch up in the future.

Any reason in particular why you like this field?

I can't give you a reason other than the subject seems interesting to me. I've studied political science, so I understand motivations behind public policy. Studying social work will help me understand just how these policies can affect people on the ground level. The vibe that people seem to be giving me is that it will be emotionally draining, because you just get to see people at their worst pretty much all the time. The money seems to be good and the job market seems to be strong depending on what segment of the industry you're working in so that's definitely caught my interest too. I'd like to know that I have a degree that is in high demand. How quickly did your friend start working after graduation?

That's great man.

Her first job in that field came a little over a year after graduating. She was holding off for something else but decided to take what she could get. I've heard of others who can start almost immediately after graduation.

Best of luck.

If you're doing it for the money, don't. You'll be disappointed. If you genuinely want to help people, then get that degree and go for it. Don't get discouraged due to the enormous amount of guidelines you have to follow, and don't be disheartened by those that you help who don't say 'Thank you.' It comes with the territory and it helps to keep your heart in your chest rather than on your sleeve.

I worked along several Social Workers for over a decade and was always amazed at some of the stuff they could do for their clients and appalled at what they had to deal with at times.
