It would have been a wrap. The only way to win against a creature like that is in a contained environment where the non-assimilated folk gets the memo that they will have to sacrifice themselves to protect the human race. That's why Dr. Blair went loco.

There was a comic book that was done as a continuation of the movie that said Blair's calculations were too conservative and that if it got out of the base that The Thing would infect all life on Earth in less than 3 months because in warmer climates the infection would move faster.

I don't know about 3 months... but it would definitely be faster than 8 years. The thing wouldn't need to hide anywhere near as much as it did on the base.


In both situations..civilization would be screwed.


Then again the thing is intelligent.. don't know if it would want to bring that type of attention to itself.
