I don't think that's true - fascism was just corporatism to an extreme - the fascists were deeply anti-communist and anti-anarchist and their first steps in both places were to crush the working-class of their countries (literal murders of hundreds, if not thousands of unionized workers in a very short period of time) who were sympathetic to anarchism and communism. The Germans and Italians were deeply suspicious of capitalism at the time - hence why the fascists were not majority parties at all - the traditional parties had to allow them in.

The US thinks of itself as exceptionalist - particularly the right - so they'll usher in fascism with ease.

Not sure I agree that they "knew" what they were getting. Von Papen was on record claiming they could corner Hitler and control him as Chancellor. They had no idea what was coming with the SS, etc.Your description is kind of the leftist version of fascism was the logical conclusion of corporatism argument. It is partially true, and the traditional parties feared the communists and backed the fascists as a shield--like Von Papen, but fascism was much different than what came before it even as far as the Kaiser or King Emmanuel in Italy. Union suppression and killing communists in and of itself would have just been a continuation of traditional authoritarianism and corporatism.

The totalitarian takeover of society and subversion of state and social institutions, including feverish anti-semitism (not present at first in Italy which had some Jewish fascists in the beginning), global war (well people wanted to fukk up Ethiopia, Poland, and France but not much else), concentration camp disappearances, and the gradual shredding of constitutional rights and political pluralism---I don't think everyone expected that. Recihstag Fire is a metaphor now, there wasn't anything similar back then.

The last charismatic leader to fukk things up was Napoleon and that didn't seem completely comparable. The fact we compare leaders now to Nazis or fascists and the lessons are ingrained in our skulls from childhood I think gives us zero excuse to fall for this.
