What was the point/moment when Twitter/FB/Blogs officially became "that thing"?

You know people used to say stuff like "Oh, I don't wanna talk on the internet, I'd rather talk to real people" What instances in society made it okay for gangsta rappers to say "Tweet me". When did the NFL, WWE, SMACK/URL rappers start saying "Tweet me"? When did we let our guards down? Is it a bad thing or is it a good thing since most of us our loyal to message boards and shyt anyway?
