I'm pretty sure it was "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis.
It's a classic and a very, very good place to start.

Before that I spent a good chunk of my youth falling asleep to
smooth Jazz stations. Don't know why or how it started but apparently
I've been into Jazz and how it sounds since I was a small child.

Only seriously started looking up artists and their discographies after I got older.

Any recommendations for jazz albums? Like classics and whatnot?
Checkout Blue Break Beats and listen to originals before hip hop got a hold of them.
I started off on Miles, Thelonius, Shorter, & Coltrane. Like the DEEP parts of their catalogs. Depends on what sound you want to hear. You got Ayers (who I'm just getting back into), Herbie, Ella, Stan Getz, Diana Krall, Axelrod, Stanley Clarke, Hutcherson, Hank Crawford. If I did it all over again, I'd start with those then jump into Monks & Coltrane.

I'll check out the Blue Break Beats. And I'll check out Miles Davis first I think. All those names you suggested got me overwhelmed but thank you for the recommendations!

First one I ever listened to in it's entirety was a dubbed tape of George Howard - Knockin' On Heavens' Door on one side
and a Najee album I can't remember the title on the other.
