It can be either money-wise. Most people I know play for real $$$. You pick real players and make a team and get points based off their stats. Most leagues you play another team each week then its a playoff at the end if you won enough in the season

betting real money. there is free league that will likely happen if you're trying to get your feet wet.
Everyone takes a turn draft a player on their team and you build a fake team. each week when your player has his games, you'll receive points based on his stats in real life. here is the rules for a standard/basic league. it'll give you a good idea.

so for instance is am doing a NBA leauge, i can build my team from ANY NBA PLAYER ex i can have players from the heat/knicks on the same team? or would it just be only heater players?
and how does the point based of stats thing wins? if the real like player scores X amount of real life points , i get fantasy points?

any player who is still available. lets say...you got the 3rd pick in the draft. LeBron and Durant got picked before you. you can't pick them. you can pick any other player though that has not been chosen and you receive points based on their real life stats. you could have LeBron and Durant on the same team if you could pull off some trades too. anything is possible

Yeah you can have players from different teams. You just have a draft at the beginning and all players from all teams are in it and you pick who u want when you are up. You have positions you have to fill on your roster
For basketball its harder to explain bc its a different setup than football when it comes to points. In football yeah u get fantasy points based off of yards, TD's, catches, shyt like that.

Points
Stats are given a specific point value, and the person with the most points at the end of the year wins.
Head to Head
You play another team and the team with the most points win. Normally a playoff to crown champion.
Rotisserie
Most difficult to understand. The goal is the be the highest ranked in all the stat categories. Whoever has the best combined ranks in all of the categories wins.
You have two different drafts to form a team: snake or auction.
Snake
Round 1: Teams 1-10
Round 2: Teams 10-1
Round 3: Teams 1-10
Etc.

Teams have a certain amount of money to bid on players to form a team. Must fill every spot (can't spend all money on one player).
Fantasy makes the player engaged in all games within a sport. Instead of just caring about your team, you end up watching and caring for more games. You also get to tool on friends and family when you beat them.
