What happened to people playing characters all the time in public?

In the 80's and 90's you had people that stayed in character for years for multiple movies, shows, when doing public appearances and talk show interviews. People like

Pee-Wee Herman
Pauly Shore
Ernest
Humpty Hump
Bobcat Goldthwait
RuPaul :dame:

I can't think of people that do that today. Even pro wrestlers seem different now. Plenty of them were always on back in the day, but I don't really see that now.

I’m shocked that I know who every single one of those people are! Lol

It’s probably because of the internet era we are in…could never take a break…somebody would always be looking for a chance to catch you slipping out of character with their cell phone out .
