OP, a lot of the best ones have been named (Psycho, Henry) but like anything, none of these are strictly based on "true stories" they're all inspired by true stories. the whole "based on a true story" thing is just a hook to sell tix.

The Hills Have Eyes
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Strangers
The Exorcist
The Conjuring
Poltergeist
Scream
Silence of the Lambs

That's true. They're inspired by a true story. Ed Gein inspired a lot of fictional serial killers like Norman Bates with the grave robbing and overbearing mother, Leatherface because he kept the skin of corpses, Buffalo Bill because he wanted to create a woman suit, etc.....He was one profoundly screwed up individual.
