Time for another DBZ thread...because coli DBZ threads are always entertaining. :ehh:

One of the most criticized aspects of Dragonball is that most non-Saiyan character, and eventually everybody besides Goku, Vegeta, and the current villain became irrelevant. But that said, out of all of them...which character do you think had the MOST potential (in terms of interesting things that could've been done) that they never lived up to?

You got -

Gohan - The obvious choice. Tons of hidden potential, and he peaks in the Cell Games where he actually went SSJ2 and beat the main villain. Unfortunately he pretty much sucked in the Buu Saga. And I don't even want to talk about what happened to him in the newest movie. :snoop:

Piccolo - Basically had his spot stolen by Vegeta. He was originally supposed to be Goku's rival, and Toriyama even said Piccolo was his favorite character. Unfortunately, the more we see of Vegeta, the less Piccolo gets to do. The last time he really had an important fight was when he merged with Kami and fought 17. After that he was pretty much a mentor/spectator.

Pan - Goku's granddaughter and Gohan/Videl's daughter. A female (part) Saiyan and the potential to be one of the few strong female characters in the show (Android 18 being the only other one). She could've been the first female Super Saiyan. She was actually pretty cool in her first appearance at the end of DBZ when she was in that tournament. Unfortunately, GT came around and she was pretty disappointing and didn't do much else but whine. But then again, anybody who wasn't Goku was pretty useless in GT. Since GT is kind of non-canon now, maybe Toriyama will do something with Pan eventually.

Goten/Trunks - Became Super Saiyans at a very young age, but didn't really do much after that. Trunks was lame in GT (everybody likes future Trunks better) and Goten was basically a background character.

Uub - Was supposed to be Goku's successor, but he didn't do much in GT other than occasionally show up to get his ass kicked.

Bulla - Vegeta's and Bulma's daughter. Another potential strong female fighter that nothing was done with. I mean, "daughter of Vegeta" just screams story potential. Not only is she not strong like Vegeta, she isn't even smart like Bulma.

Human characters (Krillin, Tien, etc.) - Debatable how much could've been done with them but still. Destructo Disc can cut through anything, so that Solar Flare/Destructo Disc combo could've been the GOAT.

Who's the worst case of wasted potential? Not in terms of power but just in terms of the story.

Piccolo in terms power, hands down. Makes no sense that he never learned Kaio-ken. The perfect power to give him considering his Namekian body, probablywould have made him on par with the Super Saiyan 2 and up.

For story...probably Gohan. Before the new movies he did manage to become the strongest non fused character in the series but still wind up losing to Buu and Goku wound up saving the day again. He ain't shyt in the new movies.

For threads sake, I'll say Gohan. Dude was great fighting Cell as a super Saiyan 2. Probably could've made keep training and actually want to surpass his father like Vegeta, or your typical hero route. fukk Goku.

As a Vegeta Stan, I really would like it if they made him on par with Goku and actually defeat a main villain. He's the most fleshed out character in the series.

But everyone, piccolo and the humans should get some shine and develop as characters. Instead of just being the Goku show.

dragonball has always been the goku show bruh. we've been following him since he was a kid.

vegeta needs to be chasing goku otherwise he's a completely different character. he'll NEVER be goku's equal, that's kind of the point.

I know and I'm fine with him being one of the center pieces of the show but not at the cost of all of the other characters. The plan was for Gohan to take over anyways but didn't the people in Japan clamor for Goku?

I agree with you on the Vegeta thing, he would be different. I just think he's matured enough as a character to deserve to be on an equal footing with Goku. How are they each other's greatest rival if Goku is on a whole other power level?

goku could function as a character with or without vegeta, but vegeta cannot without goku.

Honestly I wish they didn't kill Raditz off so damn fast. I think that was wasted potential. shyt, he was Goku's brother after all, they should've kept him around.

i often wonder why he even needed to be goku's brother at all. it didn't really serve the story in any way.

if you remove that aspect of their relationship nothing changes. plus it's not like he was ever brought up again. seems kinda silly to add that layer to a character that turned out to be so inconsequential.

Without Vegeta you can say that Goku has no character. Goku has no depth as a character as it is, but without Vegeta he's just a battle obsessed Saiyan.

Without Vegeta, we wouldn't see Goku as a true hero (at least I wouldn't) because not only did he beat him but he inspired him to become a "good guy" and actually caused him to change.

goku was his own character long before vegeta entered the scene. he doesn't train to become stronger than vegeta, he trains to become stronger period. it's vegeta who is the one obsessed with kakarot, not the other way around.

True, I just think the whole dynamic of rivals turned into grudging friends/brothers makes Goku that much better of a character.

Vegeta would be a complex character with or without Goku, but Goku without Vegeta becomes an even plainer character.
