What does the SNL cast look at during sketches?

I always heard old cast members always mentioning cue cardsIs it a teleprompter?
Its live and not rehearsed much. That's they its a big deal with guests being on there and why sometimes guests sound a little weird. Also why you see them laugh sometimes. They weren't expecting to see what is there.

They have shown episodes where you can see the cue cards they are looking at. Plus the show is written up until Saturday morning, so some sketches are not rehearsed at all.

Cue cards...I remember when Tracy Morgan the gawd got so mad at Tom Green he went and grabbed the cue cards and handed them to Tom abruptly cause he kept flubbing lines.....
Yea I remember that but I thought was rehearsed..it looked like it was planned the way they were looking at each other

I think it's hilarious when they break character and you see them genuinely having fun. IMO that was one of the best things about Fallon's sketches.
but I also read somewhere that Lorne Michaels is a huge a$$hole when the cast and guests stray too far away from the "script" and goes off on their own improvisations.
case in point, Adrien Brody.

i have never laughed as much as i do when they break character. all i have to do is think about the debbie downer sketch and my stomach hurts.
