What does the movie INDEPENDENCE DAY have to do with independence day??

i know theres a speech the president gives that says somethin like "today we celebrate independance day", but why do they show this every 4th of july on tv?? what great american story is illustrated in this movie?? i think that speech is the only time they even mention what day it is during the whole movie, but how was it relevant to anything?
